Charleston, South Carolina

The next day of our vacation in Charleston began with a drive to Patriots Point, where the USS Yorktown, an aircraft carrier from World War II, is located. We took a water taxi to the historic downtown Charleston and began meandering through all the little alleys and cobblestone streets that make Charleston so unique.

Our hotel, the Mills House Hotel, has amazing architecture and fantastic history to go along with it. Robert E Lee stayed in the hotel, and many say that it's haunted. We decided to go on a walking tour that began at the Mills House Hotel. Charleston is known for its architecture, its ironwork, its green spaces, and so much more. It's reminds me of a cleaner New Orleans in many ways.

After the walk we caught the water taxi back to Patriots Point and then headed back to Sullivan's Island to collect some seashells for the girls. It was so relaxing to walk along the beach two days in a row.

On our last day together in Charleston, we spent the morning shopping at the outlet mall (a pretty unusual choice for us, but I guess we don't often find the opportunity to shop uninterrupted). There was an unusually high number of German tourists at the outlet mall, and it turns out that when Alan and I returned to the historic part of Charleston right along the harbor, we saw a gigantic cruise ship that had come into port.

We spent the afternoon relaxing on the pier in these fabulous swings, and then we went for a long walk right along the water. That evening, the conference meetings began, and Alan prepared to head home the following day. We had a great time together--it went by way too fast (although I know our two little girls were pretty thrilled when he returned home the next day).
