Sullivan's Island, South Carolina
After all of the visits and the excitement of Moira's birthday festivities, things settled down for about a week, and then Alan and I left our girls behind for the first time and headed to Charleston, South Carolina for a mini-vacation. I had a conference in Charleston, so we went down a couple of days early to enjoy the city and surrounding beaches.
When we arrived, we decided to rent a car so that we could travel to the beaches that are nearby, and it was a great decision as we were able to make it to Sullivan's Island, which is just across the harbor from the historic city. Alan misses living near the sea sometimes, so it was important to both of us to find the time to savor our vacation by taking a relaxing walk on the beach.

The homes on Sullivan's Island were beautiful, but nothing was as gorgeous as the sunset we happened upon that evening. It was truly the prettiest sunset that either of us could ever remember seeing, and it seemed like the perfect way to kick off our long weekend in Charleston.
After the sun had set, we headed to a fabulous local seafood restaurant to have the first of many cups of she-crab soup (a Charleston specialty, it seems) and to enjoy some quiet moments together (which was quite the contrast to the chaos of our two girls hanging out at Grandma and Grandpa's house for a few days.)
