Hannah's First Birthday

Wow! It is so hard to believe that Hannah is a year old already. We celebrated with a small party at our house on Sunday at 5pm. This detail of the day and time is important because it could have been disasterous to have a party so late in the day, but Hannah was such a trooper. Although a bit overwhelmed at times, I have no doubt that she felt all the love in the room that day. And the other kids who came certainly had a great time playing with each other.

Kate made a beautiful cake for Hannah. For inspiration, she used these cute little bloomers that my friend Kathryn gave Hannah as a "Welcome baby" present. As always the cake looked fabulous and tasted even better! We'll get to Hannah's reaction in a minute. Below are some of the other decorations to celebrate Hannah's big day.

It was a gorgeous day outside (though a little hot), so the kids had fun playing in the bouncy castle. Hannah looked very serious (in fact, this picture is similar to her "Winston Churchill" look at 6 weeks when we were England) as she watched all of the action going on around her.

Moira had a great time playing with her friends--Julian, Claire, and Jack. She didn't even care at the end of the day when she had a couple of scrapes and a splinter--she was so engrossed in playing with them that she hadn't noticed all of her "ouchies."

So, when we decided it was time to come inside to eat dinner before the cake, Hannah, of course, ate very quickly. Then she just played and played with the stroller. She is so cute with this stroller because she doesn't yet walk. One might assume that she would use the stroller to practice walking, but instead, she puts her hands on the stroller and then pushes it across the room while crawling. It is quite the feat and very cute.

When it was time for the cake, all of the children were very excited. And Hannah was starting to get tired (as you will see in the video and succession of photos below). She was quite polite as she tried to figure out how to eat the cake--she literally sat in her high chair and barely touched the cake for many minutes. But she eventually got into it (after removing her bow and putting all of the cake in her hair). She was quite distraught by the end and very much needed her mom to pick her up. After snapping a few quick photos (I know, we are cruel), I obliged and gave her a bath (which she loves).

Honestly, I didn't think we'd get to presents because I thought Hannah was going to fall asleep, but she perked up after her bath. As long as she was sitting on my lap, she was content to let all the other kids unwrap the presents...which of course they did...and quickly too.

After everyone left, Kate and Scott stayed behind to help clean everything up. Hannah was very content to play with Aunt Kate (and not as content to play with me), so Kate took care of the girls while I cleaned. I love this photo at the end of the night--complete exhaustion for both of my girls after a very fun First Birthday Party for Hannah. Thank you to everyone near and far who made Hannah's first birthday a memorable one!
